Kenneth Grahame's 'Wind in
the Willows' has delighted generations of
adult and child readers since its first publication
in 1908. Among its fans was C.S. Lewis, who
recalled "humbler pleasures, chuckling
as it were in the ear, mumbling/ of glee,
as kindly animals talk in a children's tale."
The OOBR theatre review magazine
in New York said of this staging: "Ian
Reed acted the various characters with considerable
talent." His adaptation is as faithful
to Grahame's intent as the original illustrations
for the book by Ernest H. Shepard (best remembered
for 'Winnie the Pooh'), to whom Grahame said:
"I love these little people, be kind
to them."
"All the world's wiseacres
in arms
Shan't detach my heart for a single moment
From the man-like beasts of the earthy stories
Badger or Moly.
Rat the oarsman - Toad's
complacence -
Why! they all cry out to be used as symbols,
Masks for Man, cartoons, parodies by Nature
Formed to reveal us.
Here's a Health to Toad
Hall."
