Walking on Water

(Tribute to 'Spice' dance event at Pier 63)

The Lord across the Sea of Galilee
Walked out to his disciples' boat [1]
And terrified them out of their wits
For only a ghost could float!

When Peter realized who it was,
He said "I shall do it too"
But lost his nerve and started to sink
When the waves came into view.

So Christ stood by and reached out his hand
To help his dear friend out.
"O you of little faith," he said.
"Why ever did you doubt?"

The tango dancer's journey
Reminds me of Peter's travail:
Of how self-confidence is buffeted
If I try something new and fail.

But now I see at the near horizon
A floor on the Hudson's brink
So I indeed may walk on water
In the knowledge I cannot sink!
