W-imp

(on George W. Bush's choice of Paul Wolfowitz to head the World Bank)

One W., in fronting for a Wolf,
Wearing the Shepherd as his hope and anchor,[1]
Another W. wields far and wide,
His worn-out weapon a war-waging banker.

How strange the leader of one country should
Appoint the president of the "World" Bank,
Yet is it not this nation's notion that
Its baseball "World Series" has world-class rank?

And stranger still the same leader should boast
His pick, although a sycophantic fan,
In raining radiation on a land,
Amounts to a "compassionate, decent man." [2]

What matter if the world's custodian
Is given fresh license to plunder treasure?
With second-rate baseballers falsely praised,
Then why not tenth-rate bankers for good measure?

March 2005

[1]      Hebrews 6:19-20

[2]      Bush said of Wolfowitz in a White House press conference, March 16, 2005: "he did a very good job representing our country, and Paul is committed to development. He's a compassionate, decent man who will do a fine job in the World Bank."
