Underthrow
(on Democratic Party victory in U.S. congressional
elections, November 2006)
Default-elected by voter disgust,
Empowered with imperative to impeach,
The best the new-crowned Speaker of the House
Nancy Pelosi, sitting pretty, preach
Is a "change of direction" in Iraq,
Proving equivocation sets the tone
In this merely recycled parliament
And business as almost-usual condoned.
Who then shall champion the Bill of Rights
If Opposition field no opposition,
Sue crimes to Nature and Humanity,
Or counteract imperial ambition?
A resignation here, subpoena there,
A plaque installed, an old one is disturbed,
Such tokenistic trinkets must suffice
When Congress merely polishes its turd.
How tragic that electoral overthrow,
Albeit fraud-muted, bring no resolution
To clean House or to flush the White House out,
That now the sole recourse is revolution!
