Postcard From China

Confucius this, Confucius that,
A golden throne on which the Ming kings sat.
Tales of great dynasties and concubines,
The dragon with the phoenix bird combines.

Jasmine and oolong, green and lychee tea,
Beauty’s presentment, silk-swathed ceremony,
Heaven, Happiness and Harmony,
Promise of Good Luck and Longevity.

’Midst pearl and jade, as Chinese maids prefer,
O that I were a new-made Emperor!

October 2003
