Parchment

Should it concern us that a drought has struck
North-east America, our own back yard,
Warning, as global warning runs amuck,
It's not just Afghans whose travails are hard?

Should we be worried by the recent spate
Of forest fires? Since records were begun,
The hottest year was 1998,
The second-hottest was 2001!

Since 1860, of 10 warmest years,
Nine have occurred since 1990.
In times like this, should we put by our fears
In comfort that America is mighty?

Or is this just an opportunity
That Bush should seize on for new policy:
To make us more depend on energy,
Distilling water from the briny sea?

February 2002
