On Thin Ice

(on pairs' ice-skating competition at the Winter Olympics)

To Salt Lake City, The Olympics came
With valiant competitors for fame.
But how corruption mars the will to win
As earth bore witness to a brazen sin.
Of several judges with deception tainted,
But one confessed how black her crime was painted.
Colluding to award the Russian pair
First place, they robbed by secret scheme unfair
The golden couple who should win the day,
Jamie Salé and David Pelletier.
Perhaps the scandal should be no surprise
Considering how Utah won allies
To host the Games in this most favored nation
By building them on bribery's foundation.
But Canada has since received its due:
The gold was just awarded to their two,
The anthem played, the maple leaf flown high
And justice served to public hue and cry.
If only every subterfuge were known
As this one to the world's reproof was shown.
