Of
Sheep and Goats
George Bush is poised with poisoned veto pen
As two courageous reform measures inch
Their way toward congressional approval:
The first of these, Campaign Finance Reform,
Passed by the Senate back in April, must
Pass through the House of Representatives
Where Martin T. Meehan, a democrat
And a republican, Christopher Shays,
Sponsor a measure similar in scope.
The second effort is the Patients Bill
Of Rights, seeking to safeguard patients from
Denial of care. Five years ago, this bill
Was introduced by Edward Kennedy.
The Senate overwhelmingly approved
In June, but Bush seeks to supplant it with
A toothless law protecting HMOs.
Both bills are championed by John McCain
(Who was passed over by republicans
To lead their presidential aspirations),
Whose story, in the words of 'Newsweek', makes
All other presidential candidates
Seem like pygmies. A naval aviator
Shot down over Hanoi in '67,
For five-and-one-half years he lay in prison.
Unlike some other comrades, he refused
Early release or preferential treatment
And suffered torture for his principles.
Among his military honors are:
The Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit,
Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart.
At that time, pampered Bush was getting drunk
In his so-called nomadic period.
Think of the Judgment, when all souls appear
Before the throne of God: McCain shall hear:
"Well done, my faithful friend. Take thy reward,
Who tended to the suffering of the Lord
And faithful proved when in captivity."
Then Bush comes forth with outstretched hand to shake,
With affability his cause to make,
Congratulating God for seeing fit
To make him partner, by His side to sit,
So they in league may rule the Universe
To be petitioned and joint power rehearse.
But such an outcome isn't in the stars
For Love mortal presumption wisely bars
And quicker than a man may say 'Amen',
"Veto" is written by celestial pen.
