(Sonnet to celebrate her swearing-in as U.S. citizen, May 29, 2001)
Three continents thy nimble feet have graced;
Three cultures have informed thy triple-tongue.
Today for thee, our citizen embraced,
The flag is hoisted and our anthem sung.
Fifty-first star upon our spangled map,
By whom our nation shines the brighter still,
We welcome thee to grace our prosperous lap,
To ply your merchandise or what you will.
Thy way is open, take all this in stride
As I exalt thee by my joyous pen.
Knowing how graceful over wood you glide,
I press my theme, thou song of new-world men.
Thou art alighted in millennial days
And by my lines unparagoned in praise.
