Ode to the Millennium Year

Millennium Year, you promised me
Your untold riches and prosperity.
You prophesied earth-shattering events
And preached your cosmic new age sentiments
But you saw not beyond your murky doors
The same old earthquakes, riots, flooding, wars.
Have you not heard that angels are denied [1]
To know the times when Christ again shall ride?
When He shall win unanimous renown
Or seven angels shall their plagues hurl down? [2]
How then are you entitled to predict
The secret counsels of the Lord's edict?
Pray keep your peace in mortal ignorance
And veil in modesty your vain pretence.
For I, like others, languished in false hope
To mount the skies and never more to mope,
But see what you dealt out to me instead?
My loss of house, a fraud, and empty bed!

October 2000

[1]      1 Peter 1:10-12

[2]      Revelation 15-16
