Ode to C.S. Lewis - II
(Sonnet on efforts by HarperCollins to remove
Christian allusions from 'The Chronicles of Narnia')
O Clive, what treacherous moves are now afoot
To rob your novels of their raison d'être.
For HarperCollins now seem out to loot
Your love of God, to honest hearts' regret.
Will they deny that Aslan's resurrection
Echoes our Lord's? Or claim that when the lion
Calls home the stars in Narnia's final section,
'Twas not the work of the Creator's scion?
The suits, it seems, are out to make quick cash
By profiting from Harry Potter's charm.
Such short-term opportunism must clash
With thine eternal truths and stir alarm.
Dear friend, if you be turning in your grave,
Pray stir God's legions, sanctity to save.
