KenWrong

(on invocation of Fifth Amendment by Kenneth Lay,
former Enron chairman, in congressional hearings)

Before the senators, Lay beats his breast:
"'Tis deeply troubling to assert this right,
But I am duty-bound not to attest
Because my lawyer said so, him I cite."

The fashionable response of pursy times [1]
When Virtue must its pardon beg of Vice,
Is thus to hide the truth of covert crimes
And do it in the guise of good advice.

Without regard to wipe a sullied slate,
Make peace with God whose mercy is at hand,
Five others, so not to incriminate
Themselves, also refused to take the stand.

But if men native punishment outrun [2]
By the corrupted currents of this world, [3]
The more by Heaven shall they be undone
When comes the Judgment and its scrolls unfurled.

Then shall the Enron henchmen make their plea:
"The lawyer made me do it!" and bow low,
'Till Heaven counters thus their trickery:
"You paid your counsel well to tell you so!"
