InPiety

(on the religious disciplines of U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft)

John Ashcroft is a most religious man.
He tells us that he starts each day with prayer,
"Devotions" he calls them. He neither drinks,
Dances nor smokes. With others who forbear,
He emulates his forebears who forbad
Eating [1] and drinking, called the Son of Man
A glutton and a drunkard, [2] enforced rules,
Subjected life to stricture, law and ban.
His creed forgets the crux of Christ's appeal:
That where there is no law, there is no sin. [3]
Those dead to law are slaves to righteousness, [4]
But pharisees are white-washed tombs, [5] like him.
With daily rituals his laws beget,
Ashcroft would make a better moslem yet.
