Devolution

(on Supreme Court decision to give states immunity
from suits by disabled workers, Feb. 21, 2001)

"The states must have their sovereignty,"
            The Supreme Court has declared,
"If disabled people bring a suit,
            Alabama must be spared.

"Your self-determination, we uphold,"
            Proclaim the fabulous five,
"For southern states know just what's best
            For humanity to thrive."

"Those trifling little matters
            Of apartheid and slavery,
In time they would have done away with
            Without a federal decree.

"We reserve the right to overrule
            Blind Congress, and berate.
They are elected, but we're selected
            And that's a sure mandate.

"But naughty little Florida,
We'll keep you on the leash.
Your sovereignty must be restricted,
To us you're one big beach!

"Our champion's in the White House
            And so he must remain.
If we decide against you,
To whom should you complain? [1]

"So sleep secure America,
Your courts are in good health.
But Heaven help you if you're disabled,
            Why then, fend for yourself!"
