The Creator's Creator

(on the occasion of Shakespeare's birthday, April 23, 2003)

When orchestras their sublime notes resound
Or soloists with virtuosic sound
The wonder-wounded [1] universe astound,

We awestruck listeners, in rapt amaze,
On earth's ambassadors are apt to gaze
'Till heartily we cry our cheers of praise.

But coming home, we rev'lers will recall,
With Spirit's fire rooted in heart's enthrall,
The great composer who was all in all.

This reas'ning to the jealous Lord I bring.
To Him devotion's truest when I sing
Of Shakespeare shining brightly as a king. [2]

I grant the grace of God his gift bestows,
That Heaven in an earthly actor shows, [3]
Pray to discourse the melody he owes.

For seeking out the path the Bard has trod,
Do not suppose my 'havior light [4] or odd
Nor idol worship of a foreign god.

To forcefully advance what he began,
God's instrument, interpreter to man,
Ere earth four hundred times round Phoebus ran,

I pray my voice, through him, the Spirit frees,
Who was divinely sent our ills to ease,
To be his reed and sound what stop he please. [5]
