Counterfeit
With pomp and ceremony New York unveiled
The coin of her realm,
The famed Statue of Liberty
Wearing her fiery helm.
The first fair quarter scheduled
To greet 2001,
Yet three months into the millennial New Year,
I've seen no coin, not one!
Caesar Rodney has ridden long ago,
Famed mounted brigadier,
Fleet Delaware's Independence hero
(Though I mistook him for Revere).
South Carolina since has celebrated
Her palms and sun-drenched beach,
Virginia's ships have proudly sailed
And Georgia delivered her peach.
But not a sniff of the Big Apple,
Nothing from the Empire State,
It bodes not well for our coinage
Which could become "the Late…State!"
New Hampshire's 'Old Man of the Mountain'
Will be truly ancient indeed
As will the Old Line Maryland uses
Should they match your New York speed!
Ten quarters placed in patriotic pride
Of silver side by side,
Each state in its appointed slot
But yours is gaping wide!
