A Citizen's Letter to 'U.S. News & World Report'

Edward T. Pound
U.S. News & World Report Inc.
1050 Thomas Jefferson Street NW
Washington, DC 20007

November 2004

Mr. Pound:

I applaud your efforts to pound into your readers' perceptions the idea that Iran is "the world's most determined state sponsor of global terrorism," a "dangerous actor" on the world's stage, and a meddler in Iraq ('The Iran Connection', Nov. 22, 2004). With your deference to unnamed sources and murky intelligence documents, you earn the distinction of being a propagandist par excellence for the Bush agenda, a mouthpiece for manipulation, an apologist for atrocity.

For years, the Bush administration has fixed its greedy eyes, its insatiable war addiction, and its unquenchable thirst for oil, on Iran. And it is looking for any pretext to launch yet another vicious invasion. Thanks to unprincipled writers like you, it will probably get one.

Your unsubstantiated assertions about "unbridled nuclear aspirations" are imbued with the same spiritual stench of falsehood that underscored the administration's earlier designs on Iraq. Your writing and reporting reveal a dismal lack of perception, curiosity, or hunger for truth. People die because of such careless words, and in the end you will be judged for them.

In earnest,

Ian Reed
