Backfire

(on Bush's statement, June 13, 2001, that 1972
Anti-Ballistic-Missile Treaty "is a relic of the past")

The missile treaty must be scrapped today
Because it's out-of-date by thirty years,
As if a pledge no longer should hold sway
Once better opportunity appears.

As couples promise each fidelity
By marriage vows that none but death may break,
Should nations bound to lower standards be
When broken treaties Mars' fell sword awake?

If documents dealing with armament
Turn obsolete, let me propose this one
Much older yet: the Second Amendment
And rid this country of its murderous gun!
