Awakenings

Though money yet pulls politicians' strings,
The Campaign Finance Bill, at last approved,
May curb the worst excesses business brings,
While Bush, by Enron scandal now reproved,
Has overturned his veto pledge. Three cheers!
To senators McCain and Russ Feingold
Who fought for this for more than seven years,
Taking their stand lest votes be bought and sold.

Of course, the foes of freedom in the name
Of free speech vow to fight the act in court,
Thereby the Constitution to defame,
And Kenneth Starr into the fray have brought:
That peeper through keyholes, lover of dark,
Vicarious seeker of another's play.
But in Congress, glimmers of hope yet spark,
Where lives reform to see the light of day.
