Apocalypse Now?

(Sonnet on Bush energy plan, May 17, 2001)

Like as the light of dawn is one who rules
In righteousness, like brightness after rain,
King David said. [1] But nations led by fools
Shall come to ruin, so prophets explain.
By inference, the words of Jesse's son
Liken the rule of sin to dusk and night,
Like Lust, that is a tempest after sun [2]
To smother up the eye of Heaven bright.
What shall we say then of a president
Who purges toxic clouds into our air
And sacrifices the environment
Upon the shrine of oil magnates' heir?
The oceans swell and land gives way to flood.
Can it be long before the moon is turned to blood? [3]
