Alchemy

(on women's figure-skating competition at Winter Olympics)

If hearts of gold could mine the Midas touch,
Fair Michelle Kwan of riches should be queen.
Through tears of orient pearl, her smile was such
As most befits a monarch ever seen.

With cheerful semblance and sweet majesty, [1]
With baser metal hung around her neck,
She sainted the estate of frailty,
Stooping to man with angels at her beck.

Upon the podium of champions she stood,
Third-placed because the mortal prize she durst
Not take, like as her Savior nailed to wood,
Who should declare again that last be first. [2]

Another truth from scripture was borne out
Last night, as said by the apostle Paul:
The law makes sin increase [3] and fosters doubt,
For in this case, the law said "do not fall"!
